We offer a challenging opportunity for a Director of Finance who will act as key day-to-day steward of our rapidly growing Book Fair/Book Club division. The 5-year goal is $200mm in Sales with a $30mm in profit. This will division will be the only concentration for this effective and proactive Finance leader.

As a member of the Book Fair/Book Club Sr. Management team , you will be expected to partner and work closely with several Book Fair division leaders. Depending on business growth and future needs, this role may eventually be required to hire, manage, and develop financial analyst position(s).

Key Responsibilities will include:

Overall Financial Stewardship / Financial Decision Support

  • Responsible for establishing a deep and comprehensive understanding of all the financial dynamics of the BF/BC business and to quickly identify opportunities to improve the business
  • Responsible for identifying and implementing profitability improvement opportunities across the following areas (including but not limited to):
    • Revenue per Fair
    • CGOS, Shrink, E&O, etc...
    • Warehouse Labor
    • Facility costs
    • Distribution costs
    • School Commission structure
    • Rewards programs
    • Office Labor
  • Working closely with Inventory Management and the Director of Distribution and Operations, identify and implement strategies that increase asset utilization and therefore ROIC (including but not limited to):
    • Optimizing Inventory Levels
    • Implementing profitable inventory exist strategies
    • Optimizing usage of key assets: Cases, POS Systems, Warehouse equipment, Follett Fleet

Act as key financial partner and advisor for all functional areas of business to ensure the business meets financial objectives. Apprise leadership, recommend corrective action, and effect change when necessary. 

 Financial Planning and Reporting

  • Working directly with FP&A team, ensure the accurate completion of financial projections for the following planning cycles: Annual Budget, Quarterly Forecasts, and Annual 5yr Strategic Plan
  • Work closely with IT, Corporate Finance, FEWM, Sales Force administrator and others to develop robust and meaningful reporting to support the BF/BC business, including but not limited to:
  • Detailed Warehouse Labor CPU analysis
  • Profitability by Book Fair
  • Month-end financial statement reporting
  • Various other business and financial metrics

Continually develop meaningful intra and month-end reporting that provides leadership with actionable data to manage the business effectively.

Misc. duties:

  • Complete other BF/BC related activities as assigned by VP of Finance and SVP GM of BF/BC
  • Engage in BF/BC senior leadership strategy meetings to help shape the direction of the business.
  • Process Improvement: Continually automate, stream-line and improve current reporting, operational and accounting processes to improve business efficiency
  • Properly evaluate necessary staffing. Responsible for the hiring of qualified associates to enhance the team as necessary.

Job Requirements

Requirements include:

  • B.S. in Finance or Accounting.
  • MBA preferred.
  • 8+ years in Financial Planning and Analysis role.
  • Proficiency in Excel.
    • Proficiency in Lawson G/L and Hyperion.
    • Solid overall business acumen (not just financial).
    • Collaborative team player that enhances the positive culture that has been established.
    • Strong voice. Will not hesitate to bring forth recommendations and new ideas to improve the business.
    • Effective at influencing change cross-functionally.
    • Ability to research and analyze complex situations and recommend appropriate corrective action. Adept at mining and interpreting financial and business data to draw conclusion and recommend action.
    • Self-starter; person must show an ability to marshal cross-functional resources to complete above activities with minimal direction. Comfortable going beyond defined role. Curious.
    • Ability to anticipate and identify future business issues, and resolve them expediently.
    • Demonstrated ability in streamlining and improving processes.
    • Experience in large, multi-divisional company.
    • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
    • Experience making presentations to Sr. Management.
    • Experience working closely with FP&A function.
